Anodising action
Friday, 17 November 2017 00:00

The REACH regulation of the European Chemicals Agency effectively bans the use of Hexavalent Chromium for surface treatment from September 2017. Airbus have promoted using the Tartaric Anodising process instead. The latest of the process instructions in regard to this was published in October 2016.

Jacquet Weston Engineering (JWE) have been supplying Tartaric Anodising process plant to the aerospace industry since 2010 and have successfully completed over 20 such installations from large fully automated plants to small manual lines with all of them achieving Airbus and NADCAP approval.

Because of their proven track record in this JWE were approached by South West Metal Finishing based in Exeter to supply a fully automated 3m Tartaric Anodising process line.

JWE are very familiar with the details and specific monitoring requirements of the Airbus specification but due to the timing of the contract this also incorporated the raft of changes made in the October 2016 update.

JWE designed a two stage Tartaric Anodising line in accordance with the Airbus specification AIPI02-01-003 with multiple post treatment tanks and their associated rinse stages, this gives SWMF flexibility over the combinations of finishes they can offer.

The design was carried out using JWE’s Inventor software package which also allows stress calculation simulations for critical items such as process tanks and transporters.

The plant was assembled, dry run and pre commissioned in JWE’s factory prior to delivery, installation on site was then minimised reducing the disruption to SWMF

Along with the two copies of the comprehensive operating and instruction manual SWMF were also given a detailed P & ID drawing of the plant and corresponding data sheet that identifies every component used on the plant and gives them full disclosure for spares and maintenance purposes.

Due to the increasing focus by AIRBUS relating to non-conformances JWE have developed a very sophisticated control and data logging system that not only logs the information as required by the Airbus specification but also anticipates potential breaches of parameters such as pH levels or temperatures and adjusts the plant accordingly to make sure all of the factors stay within their designated guidelines.
